FACT FRIDAY -- 3 Branches of the U.S. Government
The Three Branches of the U.S. Government
U.S. Constitution
The Founding Fathers, the framers of the U.S. Constitution, wanted to form a government that did not allow one person to have too much control. With this in mind, they wrote the Constitution to provide for a separation of powers, or three separate branches of government - Legislative, Executive & Judicial.
Each branch has its own responsibilities and at the same time, the three branches work together to make the country run smoothly and to assure that the rights of citizens are not ignored or disallowed. This is done through checks and balances. A branch may use its powers to check the powers of the other two in order to maintain a balance of power among the three branches of government.

LWVC Hosted Event: California's Immigration Protections: Resistance & Resilience
The League of Women Voters of California is excited to announce the final event in our three-part advocacy webinar series. The focus of our third session will be on immigration. Each webinar features experts and a guided discussion to dig into the issues and the policies shaping them. This information will help equip us to take action in our communities and across the state.
What challenges are immigrants facing right now in California? What policy solutions are being proposed? What can we do to help our communities stay informed and aware of their rights? These questions and more will be answered at our final webinar: "California's Immigration Protections: Resistance & Resilience."
Join us on May 28 from 6:00-7:30 PM for a policy-informed conversation with experts:
Pedro Rios – San Diego Director, American Friends Service Committee
Jason Bercovitch – District Director, Office of Congressman Scott Peters
Gustavo Solis – Investigative Border Reporter, KPBS
Moderated by: Melanie Kim, San Francisco Public Defender's Office
They’ll share what the current landscape of immigration policy looks like nationally and in California, ongoing threats to immigrants rights, and what we can all do to make an impact.
The webinar is free to attend - donations are strongly encouraged to support the League’s critical advocacy efforts in Sacramento and throughout California.

Drag for Democracy, Virtual Bingo Extravaganza Fundraiser for LWVC
The League of Women Voters of California is hosting Drag for Democracy - Virtual Bingo Extravaganza, a joyful one‑hour virtual bingo celebrating the power of an inclusive democracy where every voice matters.
Why this matters
While Drag for Democracy is loads of fun, it is also a serious statement. Across the country, we’re seeing attempts to roll back hard‑won protections for LGBTQIA people, gut diversity initiatives in our schools and workplaces, and silence the very voices that keep our communities vibrant and our democracy thriving. While it may seem like bingo is an odd way to celebrate democracy, it is in fact a beautiful way to elevate voices and send a clear message: we will not let anyone erase our right to be who we are, and we will not back down on our fight for justice and belonging.
When and how to join
Drag for Democracy takes place on Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 10, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Whether you’re celebrating with moms, chosen family, or carving out a little me time, this is the perfect way to lift your spirits and show your support, so grab your bingo cards, pour your favorite beverage, and get ready to cheer, laugh, and maybe even win some fabulous prizes.
Support the LWVC Action Fund
All ticket sales and donations from this event support the LWVC Action Fund, fueling our work in Sacramento to protect voting rights, defend reproductive freedom, advance LGBTQIA rights, fight for climate action, secure immigration protections, and more. Every dollar you give helps us hold lawmakers accountable, advocate to strengthen and protect communities in California, push back against harmful policies that threaten our communities, and strengthen diversity and voting access.
Get your tickets now, only $35.
Thank you for standing with us. Let us turn bingo into a powerful act of democracy.
Can’t make the event? Donate and support the LWVC Action Fund!
