WHAT DOES THE CENSUS HAVE TO DO WITH REDISTRICTING?

Every 10 years, after the decennial US Census, states and local jurisdictions redraw their district lines based on the Census population data. Districts determine how communities are represented at the local, state, and federal levels. The Census results also determine the number of congressional representatives for each state from the total 435 total fixed by law (apportionment).
