The Golden Gate Village Resident Council is the legal representative of the residents of Golden Gate Village and has been clear on their demands for the renovation of their homes. They want immediate revitalization and renovation, no new buildings in Marin City, green renovation and jobs, the right for the residents to own their own homes, and for property to be permanently affordable. The options provided by the Marin Housing Authority do not meet all of these criteria, especially the demands for self-determination, permanent affordability, and ownership. A community land trust is a critical component of the solution.
We will show three short films covering the history of Marin City, what a Community Land Trust is, and why this structure can be a form of reparations for this community. The films will be followed by a panel discussion between Royce McLemore of the Golden Gate Village Resident Council, Bruce Wolfe of the San Francisco Community Land Trust, and Gus Newport, former mayor of Berkeley and author of “The CLT Model: A Tool for Permanently Affordable Housing and Wealth Generation”. Lisa Bennett (SURJ Marin) will moderate the conversation.
This will be a remote event (on Zoom) and there will also be a showing in person at the Marin City Senior Center (with limited capacity). Please RSVP through Eventbrite to attend the in-person screening at the Senior Center.
