The Vote: Jailed for Freedom - Register

About This Webinar - Register

Join the Alice Paul Institute for a pre-release virtual viewing party of an excerpt from The Vote, a new four-hour, two-part documentary series by PBS's American Experience. This compelling series tells the dramatic story of the epic crusade waged by American women for the right to vote. Focusing primarily on the movement’s final decade, the series charts American women’s determined march to the ballot box, and illuminates the myriad social, political and cultural obstacles that stood in their path.
The clip from the series we will view is Jailed for Freedom (26 Minutes). It showcases the fight for women's suffrage as American troops entered World War I in 1917, and how Alice Paul and the Woman’s Party continued to picket the White House daily to provoke Woodrow Wilson. Considered unpatriotic by many for not ceasing their protest and supporting their nation in a time of war, picketers were arrested. When given the choice between a fine or a brief stint in jail, most chose jail.

Following the viewing, API's Executive Director Lucienne Beard will host Dr. Linda G. Ford for a discussion. Register
