Please join us for a free virtual screening of Dear Homeland on Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 pm.

Canal Alliance is partnering with the Association of Latino Marin Attorneys (ALMA) for a free virtual film screening of Dear Homeland, a documentary by Claudia Escobar and produced by KQED about undocumented singer-songwriter, Diana Gameros’ music and journey home. The film features her coming of age story set in the United States and journey from her home Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to San Francisco, California. We see her assert herself as a musician and advocate for immigrant rights and discover her story about family, resilience and the complex meaning of the word home. 

Tickets are free, and a link to the video screening will be sent after registration.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion: 

Malinalli López Arreguín is an entrepreneur, professor, and filmmaker who focuses on producing documentary and narrative films from a social justice lens as well as being a scholar who studies the trauma of communities of color. Through filmmaking and scholarship, her work navigates areas of displacement, incarceration, immigration, crossing borders, mental health, and indigenous systems of survival in order to understand and interpret systems of oppression.  

Andres Perez is the president of ALMA, the Association of Latino Marin Attorneys.  He has been a Deputy District Attorney for 24 years in the Marin County District Attorney’s Office. Andres received his law degree from McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific. 

Lucia Martel-Dow is Director of Immigration and Social Services for Canal Alliance, overseeing legal staff, case managers, and behavioral health staff. She was born and raised in Venezuela, where she studied law and served as a member of the Venezuelan Foreign Service before moving to work in international human rights in Madrid, Spain. Lucia has a Master of Laws Degree from University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a Master of Laws in International Law and International Relations from the Complutense University of Madrid.
