On January 9, helping us to celebrate the new year in style, 33 dedicated League members were joined by 17 guests at our monthly members’ meeting, where we heard Dr. Mindy Romero talk about voter participation and civic engagement. Dr. Romero shared the results of years of research showing who registers and who votes in typically underrepresented communities across California, and offered suggestions for improving those statistics. (Thanks are due to Board member Veda Florez, who organized and advertised this well-attended event.)
NOT covered in that meeting – mostly because we had more questions than time – were the marvelous works already being done by the League of Women Voters, Marin County, in this most important endeavor. Here are three accomplishments that immediately come to mind:
- Last Fall the League joined forces with West Marin Community Services to host a Spanish-language election basics workshop for the Latino community in West Marin.
- During the pre-election season our Voter Service Committee held voter registration events for released felons, who are now eligible to vote.
- Our student intern has been working with the League on voter registration and civic engagement by young voters. She recently reported that all seniors at Drake High School are registered to vote.
To keep our momentum going, the Voter Service Committee will hold its first committee meeting of the new year on Tuesday, January 24, noon in our new League office (F-133) – well in advance of our next election. If voter participation and civic engagement is your thing, you’ll want to attend!.
